Image Upload

Uploading images into CATE

There are two steps to uploading an image into CATE and depending on what you're doing, you can do them in either order. The steps are:

  1. Upload an image
  2. Attach it to a description or other bit of content (this step is optional)

Upload an image

If you decide to do step 2 first, you might come to this via a different route, but the steps and the screens should be the same for this part of the task.

  1. Create a new image. From the menu, click on "Images and other media"
  2. Click "create new" (you can also bulk upload, covered below, which uploads many images in one step)
  3. Select "Media Object" as the type of object you want to create, then click create
  4. Fill in the required metadata
    1. Under "Full Title" click on the link which says "Add some text"step 1 image upload
    2. Add the caption
      step2 image upload
    3. Save the caption by clicking "review" then "revise" to return to the previous screen
    4. Under "Access Rights" select "copyright" from the drop down box and click "Add a rights statement"step3 Image Upload
    5. Add the name of the person which created the image. If you have not added the person, select "create" to add them or if the autocomplete is not being very helpful, click on "search" to search for a personstep4 image uploadStep 5 Image Upload
    6. Click "review" then "confirm" to submit the rights statement and return to the main screenStep 6 Image Upload

    9. Check "I agree to the terms of use"
    10. Click "submit" to submit the image

NOTE: Images are processed by a background job and so will not appear instantly, but if they don't appear after a while, contact the system administrator.

Attach an image to a Description

  1. If you are editing an description click "search for media" to find the image you've just uploaded (you could also use this to attach a key, or any other type of media object). If you have not added an image, you can click "create" instead and this will take you to step 3, above, and return you to the description once you are done (step 4, below).step 7 image upload
  2. This will take you to a search form where you can search for your image. Enter terms in the search box, and click submit. You can search multiple times if your first search does not return the results you expectstep 8 image upload
  3. Click on the title of the image to select it
    step 9 image upload
  4. This will return you to the description main page, with the image attached (NOTE: if you've only just uploaded the image it might take a while for the thumbnail to appear, but the title of the image should be there immediatly).
  5. Click "review" then "submit" to save the description with the image attached

Bulk image upload

This is a way to complete the steps 1-7 for multiple images. You will still need to attach the image to a description as described above. An example template with the labels still present is attached to this page.

  1. In the menu, select "Images and other media"
  2. Click on "upload"
    step 10 image upload
  3. Click "Download an empty template to fill in"
  4. Fill in the template
    1. "Types of media object" should contain "eu.etaxonomy.cdm.model.media.Media"
    2. "Title" should contain the caption of the image
    3. "Preserve Title" should be "false"
    4. "Full Title Text type" should contain "eu.etaxonomy.cdm.model.common.LanguageString"
    5. "Full Title Text" should contain the caption of the image (again)
    6. "Full Title Language" should be "English"
    7. "Artist" should be the identifier (uuid) for the creator of the image which you've added to CATE already - the uuid is displayed in the path of the page for that person e.g. http://www.cate-araceae.org/agent/{uuid}.html
    8. "Access Rights (0) Rights Statement" should contain "eu.etaxonomy.cdm.model.media.Rights"
    9. "Access Rights (0) Rights Type" should contain "Copyright"
    10. "Access Rights (0) Rights Holder" should contain the identifier (uuid) for the copyright holder which you've added to CATE already.
    11. "Access Rights (0) Rights Statement" should be whatever copyright statement you would like to include
  5. Delete the second row of the template which contains the labels.
  6. Return to the upload page by following the steps 1-2 above (if you have not used CATE whilst filling in the template it is likely that your session has timed out)
  7. CATE will figure out how many images you want to upload based on the number of rows in the spreadsheet and will then let you upload images, 5 at a time, until they are all done. The images are uploaded in order so keep a note of where you are if the spreadsheet is very big.
    step 11 image upload
  8. Add the files to the form, click "I agree to the terms of use" and click "confirm" to uploadstep 12 image upload
  9. You should then be presented with your spreadsheet which you should be able to check, modify if neccessary. step 13b image upload
  10. click "review" and then "submit" to submit all of the imagesstep 14 image upload
  11. You then need to attach them to descriptions as described above
